WHAT IS OCD?
OCD is characterized by intrusive, unwanted, and recurrent thoughts, images, or sensations (obsessions) that produce anxiety. The subsequent efforts to reduce this discomfort can take the form of physical or mental acts, which are known as compulsions. Performing compulsions or rituals leads to immediate, short-term relief from anxiety but this can lead to a potentially endless cycle of being dependent on performing time-consuming mental and physical acts to reduce discomfort.
OCD is commonly referred to as the “doubting disease” as sufferers struggle to contend with the debilitating anxiety and uncertainty which accompanies this condition.
It is also commonly described as the “disorder of a thousand faces” due to its varied presentations. Here are some of the ways that this disorder can manifest itself in a person's life:
